War is bad, peace is good…

November 21, 2013

…never use plastic if you can use wood…

It seems like such an obvious thing to be for peace, but it makes me feel that if that’s always the automatic response, you never have to consider if there are situations worth going to war for. WWII grew to the proportions it did partly because so many nations clung so tightly to the prospect of peace even when it was clear it wasn’t going to happen, and I think after that the idea that nonviolent resistance will suit every conflict is unrealistic.

The push to be for peace is especially strong on women. Sometimes it’s couched in obvious essentialism, about how since women give birth they should naturally be opposed to death. But even discussions that don’t use this argument still keep its conclusion. Women should automatically be for peace because…well…they just should, apparently.
